caring for a baby



1. if the baby's nappy is wet take it off, wipe the baby's bottom with a warm cloth, and put a new nappy on it. 

	Nappies can be purchased at supermarkets.


2. keep clothes on the baby and a blanket around it, however not over its face. Try to keep the room that it's in 

	warm as well.


3. Give the baby a bottle of formula milk every two or three hours. Formula is made from powder from a tin 

	specially made for babies. It can be purchased from chemists and supermarkets. Instructions for making the 

	bottles are on the tin. Babies also breastfeed from the mother's breasts, depending on which method is easier.


4. Give the baby a bath each night or two by putting it in a basin or bath with 3 to 4 inches of warm water in it. 

	Keep the baby's head out of the water at all times. Wipe the baby's body with a wet cloth. You can also put 

	a few drops of baby shampoo in the water to assist with cleaning milk etc. that might have spilt on it.


5. Keep feeding the baby milk for the first 12 months, after which it can start solid foods such as mashed carrots,

	potatoes, etc. 


6. The baby needs somewhere to sleep, such as a cot which is 4 feet long by 2.5 feet wide by 3 feet high, with a 
	
	matress and blankets, and a surround of some type to stop it rolling off the top onto the floor.

Bath temperature Should be between 32 C and 36 C, check that the water is comfortable to put your hand in

Bottles of milk should cool down to temperature where its comfortable to spill some drops on your hand or arm
